Barcelona blends extraordinary architecture with an easy-going seaside lifestyle. Gaudí's Sagrada Família and Park Güell are unlike anything else in Europe, the Gothic Quarter is a maze of medieval lanes, and the city beaches are a short walk from the centre. Dinner starts late and tapas bars stay busy well into the night.

May, June and September are ideal: warm enough for the beach without the peak-summer crowds. July and August are hot and very busy, while winter is mild and pleasant for sightseeing, if not for swimming. Sagrada Família tickets are timed, so book them as soon as your dates are set.
